Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand stressors and mediators of the elderly living alone who experienced earthquakes. Based on the stress process model, in-depth interview data with five senior citizens who have experienced the Pohang earthquake were analyzed. It was found that the ¡°earthquake¡± and ¡°life in home and shelter¡± were primary and secondary stressors, respectively. The stress outcome was ¡°declined health status¡±. On the other hand, the mediators were found to be ¡°family¡±, ¡°neighbor¡±, and ¡°life manager¡±, which reduce stress outcomes. Also, the lack of ¡°family¡± or ¡°neighbor¡± resources as a mediators lead to more use of ¡°life manager¡±. Research results show that the role of ¡°life manager¡± is as important as informal resource in the mediators for the elderly living alone. This research has the practical and policy significance of applying a theoretical model to the disaster experience of the elderly living alone and looking at the importance of ¡°life manager¡± in the mediators.
